59 - Part II Of Critically Important But Largely Unreported Aspects Of The Iraq War: The Bremer Orders (The Attempted Economic Rape of Iraq)

Today we're going to present Part II of the series, Critically Important But Largely Unreported Aspects of the Iraq War. What we'll discuss in this podcast are the Bremer Orders.

These are laws promulgated by so-called Coalition Provisional Authority head Paul Bremer when he was running Iraq for the Bush administration. These laws, as those of you familiar with right-wingers may suspect, were not exactly designed for the benefit of the Iraqi people. Quite the contrary.

The Bremer Orders imposed neo-liberal (a misnomer, since they're extreme right-wing) economic policies on Iraq: shrink the government, privatize services, slash taxes, put the country's assets up for sale, and throw open the economic borders by doing away with all tariffs.

The goal was to open up Iraq to multinational corporate exploitation. The result was not what the Bush administration expected.
